Equipment for medical condition exemption

An exemption is available if all electricity under an arrangement is supplied to equipment used by a person for a medical condition. This could mean that you:

Am I eligible?

You must have written advice from a doctor that this equipment is required for a medical condition or that the equipment must be available for use in a medical emergency to be eligible for the exemption. The equipment must not be located in a hospital, an aged care hostel or a nursing home.

If the above conditions are fulfilled, the equipment can also be used:

  • by someone other than the person with the medical condition, or
  • by the person for something other than the medical condition.

How do I apply?

If you believe you are eligible for an equipment for medical condition exemption, you must first pay the total levy amount shown on your electricity statement and then lodge the Equipment for Medical Condition Exemption Form 12A with your electricity retailer. If your exemption is approved, an adjustment will appear on a future statement.

If you are claiming an exemption for levy amounts that you have previously paid, you are only entitled to refunds of levy payments made up to 12 months prior to your electricity retailer receiving your exemption application.

If your circumstances change and you are no longer eligible for the exemption, you are obliged under the Community Ambulance Cover Act 2003 to inform your electricity retailer within 28 days of the change using Notification of Loss of Exemption Entitlement Form 18.
